Leah Darlington was an independent, feisty young woman whoâd spent a lot of years making sure the wall sheâd built around her feelings stayed secure. But Mitch Stafford hadnât blasted through the wall, climbed it, or made any of the other attempts that indicated he was determined to get to Leahâs heart. Nope, not necessary because that young man simply unlocked the door and waltzed right inside. And Leah let him because sheâd been taken in by the casual manner, the practical comments, and shared love of photography, nature, homemade pasta, and the peacefulness of a dark night. Now she questioned whether those shared interests were real or contrived as a result of the investigatorâs report sheâd found.
When a person opens her heart and trusts someone and that person disappoints her, or worse, withholds information they should have shared? Well, that causes a lot of problems, especially for someone who isnât used to sharing or opening up about her real feelings, much less opening her heart. Pop had just listened to the sad tale involving Mitch Staffordâs notebook. Dang, but that man was in a predicament.
âHe seemed so perfect.â Leah Darlington studied the uneaten pizzelle on her plate, her voice drifting off as if remembering the man and all of his perfection. âHe listened, he seemed to care, and he didnât judge. We shared so many of the same interests, but who knows?â Those hazel eyes turned bright. âWas that real or manufactured because thatâs what I liked? I donât know and it doesnât matter what he tells me now because I canât trust him.â
âTrust is a delicate thing and you sure are in a predicament. Of course, the young man says he meant every word of it, regrets what happened.â Pop eyeballed her an extra second and clarified in case she didnât understand. âHe regrets the part about why he was here and what he promised Joshâs dad heâd do. He also regrets not telling you up front or telling you sooner. What he doesnât regret is you, and how he feels about you.â
âHow he feels about me? What does that even mean?â
âWell, according to Mitch, it means you own his heart. The man loves you.â The scowl said she didnât believe him and even if she ever considered believing him, it didnât matter. âI understand youâre hurting and you have a right to that hurt, but donât let it go on and on so all you can see is the hurt. Get mad, get your frustrations out one way or the other.â Pop shrugged, slipped her a smile. âYou can get a lot of frustrations out by kneading bread. Or you can till a new patch of soil. Your choice, maybe both. And when youâre done with the frustration and the anger, hurtâs gonna be right next to it, mixed up in the tears. You mightâve already gone through all of that and a few boxes of tissues. But when itâs all done, youâve got to take a hard look at whatâs left.
